What Is a Strand Test and Why We Do It

A strand test is a small, controlled test on a section of your hair before a full colour service. It’s an essential step, especially for colour corrections, dramatic colour changes, or pre-lightening. At Wintle & Rose, we always recommend it because every head of hair reacts differently, factors like previous colour, hair condition, and natural pigment all play a part.

During a strand test, we apply the colour or lightener to a small section of hair and monitor how it reacts. From this, we can learn:

  • How your hair lifts or holds colour – Some hair lifts faster, some slower; some colours absorb better than others.

  • Expected final result – It gives us a realistic idea of what your colour will look like, helping prevent surprises.

  • Hair condition and resilience – We can see how your hair handles the chemical process and adjust the formula if needed.

  • Best formulation for your skin tone – Combined with a skin tone consultation, we can confirm whether the chosen colour will suit you.

  • Potential need for multiple steps – For big changes, we can plan if a second refinement or gloss will be needed.

In short, a strand test gives both you and your stylist confidence that the final colour will look amazing, last longer, and keep your hair healthy.

How We Carry Out a Strand Test

At Arena, we take a careful, detailed approach:

  1. Backcomb your hair in two different areas – The top section may be more damaged, while the underneath might have more colour build-up.

  2. Slice out small sections and isolate them on a piece of foil. Each section is clearly labelled. The hair amount taken is minimal and wont be noticed.

  3. Apply the chosen colour or lightener to the isolated strands.

  4. Analyse the results once the processing is complete.

This process allows us to understand how your hair will respond and plan the best approach for your desired look. After evaluating the strand test, we’ll call you to discuss the next steps and how to achieve your perfect colour safely and effectively.
